Mobile App Performance and Reliability

How does the expansion of mobile apps and devices impact load testing? Is it a game-changer? Or something current load testing is well suited for? Here’s what Dan Bartow, Vice President & CloudTest Evangelist at SOASTA, had to say on the matter:

“I think modern load testing is fairly well suited for the onslaught of mobile traffic that we are going to see year over year coming up.  The biggest problem remains at the application infrastructure endpoint.  Taking mobile devices out of the equation it’s pretty much all about more traffic going into the data centers.  But here is the game changing part about it – performance and reliability expectations are going to go way up.  When you get a slow page load in a browser we as users are accustomed to waiting or clicking refresh.  But when you’re standing in line trying to pay for a drink at your local coffee shop with your mobile device and the application runs slow (for whatever reason) then it’s pretty bad.  You don’t get your drink and the person who ordered the triple grande soy decaf fru fru flip is giving you the stink-eye.  People are going to have much higher expectations for responsiveness in mobile applications and this means more performance testing and high availability.  Two active data centers are going to become standard.  Geographic replication and distribution will become standard, and more testing will be critical.”
