Official 2012 London Olympics Apps

London 2012 Results appDon’t be surprised if some malicious apps claiming to be related to the 2012 London Olympics pop up over the next few weeks, with this many eyes on one event it’s bound to happen. But if you want to keep tabs on the latest events while you’re on-the-go these official apps are safe bets.

London 2012 Results
The official app put out by the Olympic planners will provide “all the latest news, schedules and results, allowing users to keep up-to-date with the latest action LIVE across all Olympic sports (25 July to 12 August 2012) and Paralympic sports (29 August to 9 September 2012). Users can also follow specific countries, and receive official news and updates tailored to them all in one app.” London 2012 Results is available on Android, iOS and Windows.

NBC Olympics
NBC is the official and exclusive network of the 2012 Olympics (at least in the U.S.) and as such they’re the network with the official app. Their basic app will allow users to “follow every event from London, including real-time results & schedules, medal counts and TV & Online listings. And during the nightly Primetime Show televised on NBC, the app will feature a second screen experience that makes a great companion to the on-air broadcast!” NBC Olympics is available on Android and iOS.

NBC Olympics Live Extra
Want to watch streaming video from the competition? NBC Olympics Live Extra is the app for you. “In addition to watching all the live action, during the Olympics, enhance your viewing experience with alternate camera views, plus full replays on-the-go! You can follow your favorite events and sports, and receive push notifications for event start times.” Get it for Android or iOS.

BBC Olympics
If you’re in the UK and want to follow the action try the BBC Olympics app. “Exclusive to the BBC in the UK, this is the only app on which you can watch up to 24 live streams of Olympics action and catch up with all the key highlights and medal moments.” It’s available for Android and iOS.

London 2012 Join In
If you’re lucky enough to be attending the games, or are going to London just to be a little bit closer, you’re going to want this app. Join In will keep you in the know and connected with friends and events all over London. “Wondering what’s going on this summer? Use the search and filtering tools to find out what’s happening near you. Going to the Olympics or Paralympics? Find out what you need to know, from how to get there to what’s cool in the Olympic Park. Want a reminder about something you are planning to do? Add events to your personal schedule and set an alert to remind you.” Available for Android, Blackberry and iOS.

Unfortunately, according to a report by NPR, in order to use NBC’s apps you’ll have to have a paid cable provider and a package that includes NBC channels.

I’m not saying these are the only valid Olympic-related apps available. I’m sure many countries and many sports have their own apps. Just be careful to read each app’s description and reviews to make sure it’s legit before you download it.
